Council Steps Up: Modernization and Skills for India's Textile Powerhouse


Building on a year of mixed results (during 2023) in the Indian textile industry, the Council has acknowledged both challenges and opportunities in 2024. Here's how:



  • Modernization Boost: Recognizing the need for a competitive edge, the Council is prioritizing initiatives to encourage investments in advanced machinery through financial incentives and streamlining import processes.

  • Skilling the Workforce: Bridging the skill gap is crucial. The Council is collaborating with educational institutions to develop targeted training programs focused on operating and maintaining modern equipment. Additionally, upskilling programs for existing workers are being established to ensure a smooth transition.

  • Technical Textiles Focus: The Council recognizes the high-growth potential of technical textiles. Specific skilling initiatives and research & development grants are being directed towards this sector, creating new career paths for a future-ready workforce.

By addressing these areas, the Council aims to empower the Indian textile industry to not only navigate present challenges but also thrive in the global market. This collaborative effort promises a modern and skilled workforce, propelling India's textile sector to new heights.


Modernization of India's textile industry is essential to maintain its global competitiveness. However, this modernization process brings both challenges and opportunities for the nation's skilled workforce. One major challenge is the potential job displacement caused by automation, as traditional skills might become less relevant with the introduction of modern machinery. Additionally, operating and maintaining advanced machinery necessitates a different set of skills than those required by traditional methods, potentially creating a skill gap within the existing workforce.
